2013 Maine in the Civil War calendar is now available

Richardson’s Civil War Round Table has published the 2013 Maine in the Civil War calendar, which highlights Maine residents and events connected to the Civil War of 1863. The price for each calendar is $12.95.

The Civil War of 1863 has come to a 2013 calendar near you, courtesy of Richardson’s Civil War Round Table.

Based in Waldo County, the non-profit organization has published the 2013 Maine in the Civil War calendar, which commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The calendar features historic photographs of Maine residents who fought during the war and information about dates tied to specific 1863 events.

“We thought it would be neat, being the 150th anniversary” of the war “to feature Maine people” who served in the military, said John K. Jewell of Belfast. “The Maine connection is nice.”

Among the Mainers and Mainer-related events depicted on the 2013 calendar are:

• Brig. Gen. George Shepley, the military governor of Union-occupied Louisiana from 1862-1864.

• Brig. Gen. Charles James, who commanded the 2nd Maine Infantry Regiment during its July 21, 1861 assault on Confederate troops atop Henry House Hill at Manassas, Va.

• Private John Chase, a Medal of Honor recipient for his bravery during combat at Chancellorsville in May 1863.

• The June 27, 1863 raid by Confederate sailors on Portland Harbor. The Confederates captured the United States Revenue Cutter “Caleb Cushing” and attempted to escape with the warship.

• Rufus Ingalls, who grew up in Denmark, Maine and served as the Army of the Potomac quartermaster.

• Ruth Mayhew, born in Orland. She volunteered to serve as an Army nurse after Gettysburg and earned a special place in the hearts of the many ill or wounded soldiers and sailors whom she assisted.

The 2013 Maine in the American Civil War calendar is available by mailing a check for $12.95, plus $2.25 for shipping and handling, to Richardson Civil War Round Table, 16 Leeman Drive, Northport, ME 04849. Proceeds from the calendar sales will benefit Civil War battlefield preservation. According to Jewell, this year Richardson’s Civil War Round Table has donated money to preservation efforts at Gettysburg and for the Civil War Soldier’s Quilt at the Belfast Historical Society.
